Shalamov became acquainted with Olga Ivinskaya in the 1930s. They worked together in a labor union journal called For the Mastery of Technique (“Za ovladenie tekhnikoi”), with its editorial office located in the House of Unions. They had a brief romance, but Shalamov did not know that Ivinskaya was the lover of his favorite writer, Boris Pasternak.

Shalamov often visited Ivinskaya's apartment on Potapovskii Lane. After he found out about the relationship between Ivinskaya and Pasternak, Shalamov was deeply offended and ended his relationship with Ivinskaya. Ivinskaya in turn used her influence to cut all communication between Shalamov and Pasternak.
