Julius Schrader, a philosopher and a mathematician, became acquainted with Shalamov in mid-1966 in Nadezhda Mandelstam’s kitchen. The following year, they began to exchange letters and this correspondence continued until Shalamov’s move to the Litfond house for the elderly and disabled.

Schrader did not abandon Shalamov and continued to visit him even when the writer’s health was deteriorating rapidly. He also participated in efforts to publish Shalamov’s texts during the perestroika era, contributed to foreign publications, and wrote articles about Shalamov for various publications.
