Shalamov was a passionate fan of the football club Spartak. This may be explained by his hostile relationship to the NKVD (The People's Comissariat of Internal Affairs), which was known for supporting Dynamo, Spartak's rival.
As long as Shalamov's health allowed it, he often went to the Dynamo stadium to watch football matches. His friends remember that even when Shalamov was already seriously ill, he would sit in front of a television and follow the matches enthusiastically.
