Church of St. Nicholas in Kuznetsy
Address: 15 Vishniakovskii Lane, Moscow
The Church of St. Nicholas in Kuznetsy was one of the few churches that were not closed during the Soviet era. Shalamov’s funeral was held there through the initiative of Elena Zakharova, a doctor who visited Shalamov during his last six months in the home for the elderly. According to Zakharova, she never spoke with Shalamov about religious issues, but she decided to organize funeral services in order to prevent a memorial meeting dedicated to Shalamov in the House of Writers. The Priest Aleksandr Men specifically recommended this church to Zakharova.
