Varlam Shalamov attended a three-month training course, which took place in the former estate of Count Aleksandr Tolstoy. Nikolai Gogol lived in this house during the last years of his life and also died there. After the October Revolution in 1917, the house served as an apartment building and the headquarters of various institutions.
