Shalamov’s story "Tri smerti doktora Austino" ("Three Deaths of Dr. Austin") was published in 1936 in the journal Oktyabr ("October"). It was his second published story — previously, he had published only essays in various newspapers and magazines, mostly about topics related to industrialization.
