On June 6, 1969, Crimean Tatars organized a demonstration on Mayakovskaya Square. It was devoted to the international meeting of the Communist Party. Five participants brought banners with slogans: "Long live Leninist nationality policy," "Communists, you should return Crimea to the Crimean Tatars," and "Stop the persecution of Crimean Tatars."

The demonstration drew a large crowd of spectators. With their help, the police arrested the demonstrators and took them to the GUVD building (38 Petrovka Street). The police denied the demonstrators’ propiskas (Soviet residence permits), and on the following day the arrestees were deported to a residential area in the Krasnodar region.
